From the archive

Not the fondest memories cling to this gift, though its unyielding, sturdy heft does what it can to blunt the edge. I’ll occasionally jot down a line or two, but the fraught circumstances of its acquisition always pull me up short. Back into its metallic sheath it goes—a rare, quiet totem of tougher days, broken trust, and the calculated duality of the professional world.
